Composition
Alfuzin
Tablets
Each tablet contains Alfuzosin
hydrochloride (extended release)
10mg
Indication
Alfuzosin® (alfuzosin HCl 10 mg
extended-release tablets) is an
alpha1-blocker for the treatment
of the signs and symptoms of BPH.
Important Safety Information
Do not take Alfuzosin if you
have liver problems or if you
are taking antifungal drugs like
ketoconazole or itraconazole, or
HIV drugs like ritonavir.
Alfuzosin can cause a sudden
drop in blood pressure,
especially when starting
treatment. This may lead to
fainting, dizziness, and
lightheadedness. Do not drive,
operate machinery, or do any
dangerous activity until you
know how Alfuzosin will affect
you. This is especially
important if you already have a
problem with low blood pressure
or take medicines to treat high
blood pressure. There may be an
increased risk of low blood
pressure and fainting when
taking Alfuzosin in combination
with blood pressure medication
or nitrates, or erectile
dysfunction medication.
If considering cataract surgery
(clouding of the eyes), tell
your eye surgeon that you are
currently taking Alfuzosin or
have previously been treated
with an alpha-blocker.
Before taking Alfuzosin, tell
your doctor if you have kidney
problems.
Also, tell your doctor if you or
any family member(s) have or
take medications for a rare
heart condition known as
congenital prolongation of the
QT interval.
BPH and prostate cancer can
cause the same symptoms.
However, Alfuzosin is not a
treatment for prostate cancer.
The most common side effects
with Alfuzosin are dizziness,
upper respiratory tract
infection, headache, and
tiredness.
Indications
Alfuzosin is used to treat
symptoms of benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH, enlarged
prostate) such as frequent,
urgent need to urinate during
the day and at night, weak urine
stream, and difficulty
urinating. Alfuzosin is in a
class of medications called
alpha-1 blockers. It works by
relaxing the muscles in the
prostate and bladder neck to
allow urine to flow more easily.
Description
Alpha blocker drug ,relax the
muscles in the prostrate gland
and the neck of the bladder. This
allows the urethra to open wider
so that urine flows more
easily.
Contraindications
Alfuzosin should be used with
caution in patients with severe
renal insufficiency, and should
not be prescribed to patients
with a known history of QT
prolongation or to patients who
are taking medications known to
prolong the QT interval (term
related to cardiology).
Alfuzosin should not be used in
patients with moderate or severe
hepatic insufficiency,
(Childs-Pugh categories B and C)
since alfuzosin blood levels are
increased in these patients.
Alfuzosin should not be
co-administered with potent
CYP3A4 inhibitors such as
ketoconazole, itraconazole, and
ritonavir, since alfuzosin blood
levels are increased. Alfuzosin
is contraindicated in patients
known to be hypersensitive to
alfuzosin hydrochloride or any
component of Alfuzosin tablets.
During cataract surgery, a
variant of small pupil syndrome
known as
Intraoperative Floppy Iris
Syndrome (IFIS) has been
reported in some patients on
or previously treated with
alpha-1 blockers.
OVERDOSAGE
Should overdose of ALFUSIN lead
to hypotension, support of the
cardiovascular
system is of first importance.
Restoration of blood pressure
and normalization of
heart rate may be accomplished
by keeping the patient in the
supine position. If
this measure is inadequate, then
the administration of
intravenous fluids should
be considered. If necessary,
vasopressors should then be used
and the renal
function should be monitored and
supported as needed. Alfuzosin
is 82% to 90%
protein-bound; therefore,
dialysis may not be of benefit.
Side effects
The most common side effects are
dizziness (due to postural
hypotension), upper respiratory
tract infection, headache, and
fatigue.
