World cereal production in 2007 has been revised downward since the previous report in July, but at 2 114 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms), would still be a record high, and 5.3 percent up from 2006. India’s position of cereal production is 239.13 million tonnes with the share of  11.31 per cent. The govt. of India recently revised the 2007/08 food grain production estimate upward to record 227.3 million tons from its earlier estimate of 219.3 million tons, citing favorable growing conditions for the upward revision. The revised estimate includes 76.8 million tons of recently harvested wheat, 95.7 million tons of rice, and 39.7 million tons of coarse grains, and 15.2 million tons pulses, all records, concerns about food inflation forced the government to ban exports of non-basmati rice effective April 1, 2008, impose an export duty of $ 200 per ton on basmati rice on top of the minimum export price of $1000 per ton, make rice imports duty free, and restrict private participation in wheat purchases.

However, the government has reportedly permitted exports of 500,000 tons of non-basmati rice to Bangladesh, announced in the aftermath of cyclone damage in Bangladesh. According preliminary government data, rice exports in CY 2007 were around 6 million tons.

The export ban on non basmati rice and the export restriction on basmati rice would drastically lower India’s rice exports in CY 2008 and MY 2008/09 to around 2.0 million tons, mostly basmati rice, and some non-basmati rice exports under bilateral agreements/food aid programs. Although India abolished the Import duty on rice erective March 21, 2008, through March 31, 2009, no import have taken place so far as world prices are much higher than Indian prices.

Production fo other coarse grains in MY 2007/08 includes 7.7 million tons of sorghum, 12.2 million tons of millet and 1.3 million tons barley marketed in MY 2008/09. The increase is largely in response to higher international prices as India has now emerged as an exporter of corn and there are no export restrictions on corn unlike in the case of wheat and rice.

India’s MY 2007/08 corn exports are estimated at 1.5million tons, mostly to South East Asian countries and the Middle East. Besides corn, India is also exporting some barley. In October – November are likely to continue in MY 2008/09.

   NON BASMATI RICE

Any rice other than basmati rice is called non- basmati rice. In the world it has been reported that there are 10000 varieties of rice and out of which the maximum number are in India. In fact, basmati rice equals to only 1% production of the total rice grown in India. According to the recent statistics released by the government of India, India which is the second largest rice producer in the world, has exported 51.02 lakh tons of non-basmati rice till January 2008..India’s export of non basmati rice has increased from Rs. 3178.16 Crores (USD Million 717.90) in 2005-06 to Rs. 4243.07 Crores (USD Million 941.23)  in 2006-07. The Major Importing countries of Indian Non Basmati rice are Nigeria, Bangladesh, South Africa, U.A.E and Ivory Coast etc.

BASMATI RICE
India is the largest producer and exporter of basmati rice in the world. The annual production in the country hovers at around 10-15 lakh (1-1.5 million) tonnes a year, of which around two-thirds is exported. The remaining is consumed, within the country. Basmati rice is grown exclusively in the northern part of Western Punjab state (on both sides of the Indo-Pakistan border), Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh.

Gulf region remains the major markets for Indian basmati rice and inside Gulf, Saudi Arabia accounts for the major chunk of basmati imports from India. Pakistan is the sole competitor for India in the international market for basmati rice. India's major markets for basmati rice exports have been Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, U.K, U.A.E, Yemen, etc. In fact, Saudi Arabia traditionally has been the largest market for Indian basmati rice.

WHEAT
Wheat cultivation has traditionally been dominated by the northern region of India. The northern states of Punjab and Haryana Plains in India have been prolific wheat producers. While this cereal grass has been studied carefully in the past, recent years of painstaking research by India's finest scientific talent has paid off with the development of distinctly superior varieties of Durum Wheat.

With a production reaching ten times in past five years, India is today the second largest wheat producer in the whole world. India has the largest area in the world under wheat.

India is also a major exporter of Wheat in the world. The major destination for Indian Wheat is Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Benin and Thailand.

OTHER CEREALS

India’s export of other cereals like Bajra, Barley, Buck Wheat, Canary Seed, Grain Sorghum, Jowar, Maize Seed, Oats, Other Creals, Other Maize, Ragi and rye etc has increased from Rs. 453.82 Crores (USD Million 102.51)  in 2005-06 to Rs. 599.25 Crores (USD Million 132.93)  in 2006-07.
